PONIES FINISH UP REGULAR SEASON IN STYLE

Dateline: Coach Onken’s Living Room 9:29PM 2/8/2025

The Ponies wrapped up the 24-25 regular season this week.  It all got under way Thursday evening which was also senior night.  The Ponies hosted Tartan and SEC member Cretin Derham Hall.  Neither the Titans nor Raiders offered a great deal of competition for the Ponies, but it was a wonderful evening for sending off our seniors.  The Ponies started with a 72-6 win over Tartan.  Of note, seniors Andrew Karas and DeMarco Cavil both brought home victories for the Ponies.  In the final match of the evening the Ponies finished a 9-0 Suburban East Conference record with a 65-6 win over CDH.  Senior Wyatt Reeves had his first career varsity match and win.  This win gave the Ponies their first SEC title in a few years.

On Friday evening the Ponies headed to Cambridge for their final dual of the season.  With a couple of starters out the Bluejackets made it a bit close, but with a win at 189 Cohen Lumby secured the win and the Ponies took home a victory at 39-30.  The Ponies finished the season with a strong 24-6 record and now look towards this coming Friday for another showdown for the Section 4AAA title against the Mustangs of Mounds View.

Of note, during the JV dual something exciting took place.  Though first year wrestler Caleb Line has worked hard to get a win, he did not quite get that goal achieved.  However, sometimes it is the little things that count in this sport and that is precisely what happened on Friday.  Caleb achieved his first reversal and followed that up with another one nearly turning his opponent twice in a Peterson type role.  This was great progress for Caleb and maybe the best part was seeing his teammates and coaches cheering him on the entire way.  Its the little things, it really is.

On Saturday the varsity took a break while the JV went to White Bear Lake for the SEC JV Tournament.  The Ponies finished 3rd only due to the fact that all wrestlers scored.  The Ponies managed 296 points with 18 wrestlers compared to Mounds View who placed 2nd at 302 with 35 wrestlers and Woodbury who won the tournament with 314 points and 28 wrestlers.  The Ponies wrestled well, and you can see their places below.
